Himalayan Birding Tour

Day 1
Arrive Delhi Airport.

Assistance upon arrival later we will drive to Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary also called Keoladeo National Park, we will stay there for night at a lodge.

At Bharatpur we will do bird watching on foot and cycle rickshaws. At this bird sanactuary we can checklist about one hundred fifty plus species. Birds seen are herons, and egrets, Ruddy breasted crake, brown crake, Sarus cranes, Common cranes, Jacanas, chats, Baillon's crake, Long tailed shrike, Little heron, Yellow Bittern, Black Bittern, Grey Hornbills, Thrushes, Great white pelican, Reed warbler and Yellow-browed Warbler, species of Munias, migratory Lark and vast range of teals and duck species that arrive in cold season. Bharatpur is at a distance of 56 plus kilometers from Agra.

Day 2
Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary

Birding on foot and cycle rickshaws with an expert guide. It yields best results when you are on foot and your concentration is better. Looking for the winged creatures need lot of attention for a long span. At Bharatpur enthusiasts have to cross over diverse terrain and stop frequently whenever you encounter an avian. Often you have to fix the spotting scope and pay attention to what the guide is saying. Being an outsider you have to rely on the bird guide for identification and search. Ornithological tours are most successful in winters whence the palearctic migrants arrive during the winters. Those interested in photographing breeding behaviour should visit in summers and during the monsoon. The guides have to be hired at the Gate after paying the charges and if you wish you can hire a rickshaw or cycle to reach the center point with canteen.

Day 3
Birding with an expert

You have to be fit in order to take extensive walks during the expedition at Bharatpur Bird Park. Apart from a long attention span you senses should be on alert all the time. Some times the species are well camouflaged or hidden in the foliage then you have to rely on your hearing and vision to locate them. But most of the wetland species are in the open in the marshes and lakes and sighting them is not much of a strain. At this hot spot be prepared to checklist many teals, ducks, cranes, shore birds and storks many of which are palearctic migrants. But there are pockets of forests and grasslands hence all senses should be on alert to sight them in cover. The expert guide familiar with the terrain will be of immense help.

Day 4
Drive to Chambal River Sanctuary

Drive to Chambal, Early morning river cruise at the river, later drive to Agra visit Tajmahal. Lunch at Agra later Drive to Delhi overnight Hotel. While on foot birding is done in open area at Chambal it is the river boating that suits best to sight avian species on the shore. The rugged mountain terrain, ravines and dunes hold large number of bird species. These can be sighted on a motor boat trip which is of two and half hours starting point being twenty kilometers from Bah Township which is at a distance of seventy kilometers from Agra. On the shores and the river overhead we can see Indian skimmer breeding, pelicans, geese, larks, gulls, buntings, terns, raptors, sandgrouse and storks to name a few. We will also see dolphins emerging from the depth and diving back amidst strong currents. On the emerging islets we can see crocodiles, gharials and turtles. The scenic settings accords great pleasure while cruising slowly on the Chambal River Sanctuary boat tour.

Day 5 - Sat Tal in Himalayan Foothillsh
Leave for Sattal in Nainital District at a driving distance of nearly seven hours.

At Sattal birding is unique much different from plains species like Nilatavas, pheasants, Griffons, Bearded Vulture. Forktails, Thrush, Blue throated barbet, Great barbet. Also see long tailed broadbill, Blue winged Minla, Streaked laughing thrush, white throated laughing thrush, collared owlet, Black Bulbul, Jays, Dark-throated Sunbird and Green tailed sunbirds.The terrain is hilly with lots of forest covering of pine, deodar and oak. It is home to seven lakes hence the name these are fresh water biomes that attract lot of bird species of foothills and plains. Being a hill resort many tourists arrive here on short tours on holiday and sightseeing.

Day 6
Day spent Birding at Sattal yields more and more species of avian wonders

Greater and Lesser Yellow napes, Spectacled warblers. Winter wrens, Speckled Piculet, Eurasian Doves, bar winged flycatcher shrike, Grey Bush chats and Russet Sparrows. Sight Cuckoos - Indian, Oriental, Large-hawk and Eurasian Cuckoo. Set your eyes on Grey Tree pies, Olive backed pipits, Maroon Oriole, Black winged Cuckoo Shrike, Scaly wren, Himalayan parakeets, Spot winged tits also Black-lored tit and Green-backed tit. It snow often in Sat Tal hence be adequatly dressed for walking on snow ridden pathways. This is the best destination for Garhwali food in India while on ornithological tours.

Day 7
Morning drive to Pangot in Himalayan Foothills

Morning drive up higher to Pangot over two hundred meters above sea level, it is fourteen kilometers uphill from Naintal Township which is a hill resort as well. We will stay Pangot Lodge. Birding amidst Pine, Cedar, Oak trees and Rhododendron and Juniper bushes at great heights is a unique experience. Sight plenty of Striated Prinias, Siberian bush chat, Nuthatches and Tree creepers. Discover large species of Woodpeckers. Chir pheasant is found here in Pangot along with Koklass pheasant.

Day 8
Cheena Peak and Kilbury

Cheena Peak and Kilbury. Discover more and more Himalayan avifauna amidst the perennial and seasonal creeks. While on the trek discover enchanting mammals - a Leopard, Civet and Yellow-throated Martin, Goral and Muntjac. With luck spot Crested Serpent Eagle and Hawk Eagles, Accentors, Peregrine Falcons, Redstarts and Streaked and Laughing Thrushes, Yuhinas and Upland Pipit.

Day 9
Drive to Delhi

Drive to Delhi overnight Hotel.
